Poor Manager Kim.

Surely life would calm down now.
Absolutely not.
Episode 8 begins with Kim locked inside what appears to be a North Korean prison.
He’s interrogated.
He’s beaten.
He’s threatened.
Then he escapes…
…only to discover the prison was fake.
The South Korean government built the whole thing.
Apparently this is what happens when your former employer refuses to accept your resignation.
Some companies send retirement gifts.
This one built a fake prison.
Apparently You Can Never Quit Being Useful
Kim spent years trying to become invisible.
He wore boring office clothes.
Worked at a bank.
Raised his daughter.
Pretended his biggest daily problem was paperwork.
The government looked at all of that and basically said,
“That’s cute.
Now come save the country.”
Episode 8 quietly asks a funny question.
Can someone really retire…
if everyone keeps refusing to let them?
Korean dramas love heroes who want power.
Manager Kim is the opposite.
The only thing he wants is unemployment.
Unfortunately,
he’s just too good at his job.
“Retirement review: Failed successfully.”
Korean Dads Never Actually Retire
One thing I love about this drama is how Korean fathers are portrayed.
They don’t suddenly become superheroes.
They’ve always been capable.
They simply stop showing it.
Many Korean dads spend decades working quietly without talking much about what they’ve sacrificed.
Children grow up thinking,
“Dad just goes to work.”
Then one day they realize…
Dad has been carrying everyone the whole time.
Manager Kim takes that idea to an absurd level.
Most dads hide stress.
Kim hid an entire intelligence career.
Some fathers fix broken shelves.
This father accidentally starts international incidents.
Different parenting styles.
Same love.
Meanwhile, Han-soo and Jin-cheol Return to Real Life
Kim goes back to another secret mission.
His friends get something even scarier.
Real life.
Han-soo returns to family problems.
Jin-cheol comes home looking terrible after being dumped in the countryside.
No medals.
No celebration.
Just normal dad responsibilities waiting for them.
That’s actually one of the funniest parts of the series.
One minute they’re surviving national-security operations.
The next they’re worrying about school problems and family complaints.
Maybe that’s why these characters feel so relatable.
Nobody gets to stay the action hero forever.
Eventually…
someone has to pick up groceries.
“Mission complete. Dad duty begins immediately.”
My Take
Episode 8 doesn’t have the biggest action scenes.
Instead, it quietly changes the direction of the story.
Min-ji is finally safe.
Now the question becomes,
Who owns Manager Kim?
The government?
His old organization?
Or his family?
Kim already made his choice.
He chose his daughter.
The problem is…
everyone else keeps choosing him.
Maybe that’s why Manager Kim feels different from most action heroes.
He isn’t chasing another mission.
The missions keep chasing him.
And honestly,
that’s probably the most realistic part of adulthood.
You finish one problem…
and another one is already calling your phone.
Would you answer if your old boss called after years of retirement? Or would you pretend you never saw the message?
